In this week's episode I will focus on five goals that I've encountered in my running years leading up to my marathon experience. These goals are very common among runners of various levels. Goals: 1. "Running My 1st Marathon",
2. "Running to improve my PR",
3. "Running for a Cause",
4. "Health Reasons",
5. "Future Running"
What are your goals?

Goal #4 "Running for health reasons"

Physical and mental health reasons:

Whether you are trying to loose weight, stay in shape, running is one way to accomplish a portion of your goals.  From personal observations and experience, running has helped me stay in good physical condition as well as in a good mental form for the last 15 years.  While running along will not help you achieve your ultimate goals it does play a major factor on your health condition. Today I'll keep my blog brief by focusing on the physical and mental aspect that comes from running.

Physical benefits:

Regardless of the sports you've played, running is a subset entity of most sports in general whether is football, basketball or baseball.  In essence running is simply the foundation of most sports.  But focusing more on the physical benefits achieved from running, loosing weight is at the top of the list.  Personal observations will converge on a similar conclusions, running helps reduce the amount of body weight.  But, if loosing weight is your main objective, I would recommend factoring in your dieting habits or intake consumption.  Reducing body weight will also help maintain the condition of body joints such as knees since less stress will be applied to joint areas.  The physical benefit attained from running is a large finite list of incentives to your health and body.

Mental benefits:

On the mental side, running is a great mechanism for stress reduction as well as a contributor to our personal behavior. Had a long stressful day? Try going out for a run (short/long) you'll thank yourself after you see and feel the difference within yourself.  Anytime there is a high level of frustration or stress a good run can dissipate concerns that distract the performance of your system.  When going out for a run you are exposing yourself to the freshness and beauty of Mother Nature and gain a sense of freedom from any complex activities in your life.

While running alone will not help you achieve your ultimate goals due to other influential factors such as dieting, time commitment, motivation and unexpected events your body will appreciate the efforts you are making in order to maintain a good physical condition. And on the other hand your mind will also experience decrease in stress and boost in energy levels that come as a result of physical and mental conditioning.
